|---|---|---|
Spilled Salt |
All probabilities are set to 0 | 'Spilled Salt' was originally 'Broken Mirror', but I thought that would conflict with the existing 'Glass Joker'. Both are attributed to bad luck or misfortune, which lead to it's usage of negating luck based effects from occurring. |
Kerosene |
X2 Mult, destroys itself and a random Joker if the score catches fire |
Kerosene is a flammable liquid used as fuel for light and power. It's ability to combust and destroy itself and another Joker is based on how the players score will light up with a fire effect if the current hand can beat the required score in one hand. |
Big Earner |
Bonus and Mult cards will apply the effects of the other |
A 'big earner' is defined as someone who makes a lot of money, which I translated to the Bonus and Mult cards that increase score by +30 Chips and +4 Mult respectively. |
Pomegranete |
Levels up the next three played hands | The idea was to create a food joker (which provide a limited effect until they expire) to a Joker that levels up played hands. The choice of a Pomegranete is a reference to the game Hades by Supergiant Games where it can upgrade the Boons the player acquires (Techhead immediately called me out on that) |
Reciept |
Earn between $2 and $5 when skipping a Booster Pack | Similar to 'Red Card' giving mult when skipping Booster Packs, Reciept focuses on money, such as when getting a refund from an unsatisfactory product. |
Daredevil |
+50 Mult, -2 Hand Size |
Inspired by the Stuntman Joker of the base game, Daredevil was designed to increase mult while reducing hand size. Like Stuntman, the -2 hand size is inspired by stunt performers driving motorbikes with their hands off the bars. |
Canvas (Idea by Cito) |
Transforms into Painted Canvas after scoring 15 more Wild Cards |
Cito's idea for this Joker was to give some bonus to Wild cards, and the idea came about with how Wild cards can be any suit to interpret that as some effect with paint. |
Painted Canvas (Idea by Cito) |
Wild Cards give X1.5 Mult when scored |
Applying the X1.5 Mult was Cito's original idea, but we eventually decided to make the Canvas Joker into two seperate ones as an interesting twist to build off of the paint theme. |
Callback Humor |
Effects of any seal have a 1 in 4 chance of activating a second time |
Callback humor is a technique in comedy performances through repeating past jokes to amplify punchlines after it stuck in an audience's memory. The art depicts the performer from the Hack card showing this through one of his sets. |
Devilish Deal (Idea by RubberhoseRat) |
Swaps Hands and Discards when the first hand is drawn. |
The card art depicts the antagonist Bill Cipher from the Gravity Falls series. Bill often makes deals with humans using contracts formed by shaking his hand, thus the idea of swapping playable hands and discards around. |
Sunk Cost Fallacy (Idea by Jestro) |
X1.0 Mult, increases by X0.2 if The Wheel Of Fortune is used |
The 'sunk cost fallacy' is a phenomenon of continuing a strategy due to all the prior investment to it even if quitting would be more beneficial. This relates to the Wheel Of Fortune tarot card being highly saught after for its effect despite it's 1 in 4 chance of success. |
Arsonist (Idea by Mopster) |
+0 Chips, When round ends, increase by +5 Chips and lose $2 |
The card art and effect are inspired by Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in the movie The Dark Knight, particularly the line "It's not about money. It's about sending a message." The red splash is a reference to a similar design used on a card in a promotional poster for the movie. |
Aftershock |
Retrigger all played Stone Cards if previous Hand contained a Stone Card |
An aftershock is defined as a smaller earthquake following a larger one, translating to the ability to retrigger Stone card effects the turn after one is played. The art depicts a seismic activity map of the western end of the United States. |
City Planner (Idea by Jestro) |
+6 Mult for every Stone Card held in hand |
City planners are responsible for overseeing community development projects. Stone cards are substitute for bricks and concrete used in constructing foundations and walls when developing building areas. |
Philosophers Stone (Idea by Jestro) |
Scoring Steel Cards turn into Gold Cards, and vice versa |
In alchemy, the philosophers stone is an alchemical substance capable of transmuting metals to gold. This ties to it's effect of converting Steel cards into Gold cards, which was updated to perform the opposite as well for the sake of balance. |
Running On Fumes |
+0 Chips, increases by +10 for every hand before the final hand, Resets at the end of the round |
The term 'running on fumes' refers to continue functioning on minimal resources, such as a nearly empty tank of gas as depicted in the art. The theme also translates to the cards ability providing a boost to win the round when getting close to a game over. |
Cash Back Card (Idea by Cito) |
Any purchase increases end of round payment by $1, Resets at the end of the round |
Cash Back cards return a small amount of what the user has spent with eligible purchases, giving players a small amount of money back with every purchase made in a shop. |
First Try (Idea by Cito) |
X3 Mult, destroys itself if the round isn't beaten in one hand | This was a real simple and quick way to add in a 'Bullseye' sort of card. On it's own, it can clear earlier rounds with ease, which can help score additional money faster to prepare for more elaborate and useful Jokers for later rounds. |
System Crash |
+30 Chips per level of played hand, 1 in 4 chance to decrease level of played hand |
The art depicts a typical Blue Screen of Death, a fatal error screen on Windows operating systems. The effect was thought up after the art and was designed as a high risk card to take since it can potentially ruin powerful hands. |
Prosopagnosia |
All Jacks, Queens, and Kings count as each other when scored or discarded |
Prosopagnosia, or face blindness, is a neurological condition that hinders the ability to recognize faces. This is characterized through all three face cards activating effects on cards like Triboulet or Hit The Road which only work on one. |
Scratch Off |
Scoring a Three Of A Kind of 7s rewards $5, any other Three Of A Kind rewards $1 |
Scratch Off tickets usually consist of a game where you try to match three symbols to win a cash prize. Most games that users win is of a minimal reward thats a net positive for the cost of the card, but three 7s is usually used for a grand prize, and also resembles a trio of lucky 7s for jackpots on slot machines. |
Desert Heat |
When the round begins, add a Mirage card to your hand |
Discarded cow skulls are usually used in a comedic setting to portray the blaring heat of a desert. The heat creating a new card that isn't actually there adds onto this. Mirage Cards were designed to be a sort of freebie to make X of a kind hands easier to come by. |
Drinking Bird |
X1.25 Chips on every other hand played |
A drinking bird is a toy heat engine that mimics a bird drinking from water. The motion of dunking and then rising again in a cycle is reflected with the multiplier that activates on every other hand. |
Lead Pig |
Isotope Cards have a 1 in 2 chance to not decay when scored |
The idea for Isotope Cards multiplying chips came from the idea of a half life decay seen in radioactive elements. Lead Pigs are tools used to carefully contain radioactive elements, and while half lifes can't be stopped, preserving the effect felt like an easy offset to it's limited usage. |
Glass Houses |
Scoring Glass Cards retrigger after played Stone Cards, but are guarenteed to break |
The name and effect is a play on the saying "those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones". The card art is based on the "projectile mineralogy" joke from journalist Benjamin Richard "Yahtzee" Croshaw from an episode of his series Zero Punctuation, with the art instead based on the successor series Fully Ramblomatic. |
Default Cube |
+0 Chips, Increases by 1 for every card used in the first discard |
The card depicts a newly created scene in the modeling software Blender, which always starts with a light and a single cube. There is a running joke among Blender users that they delete the cube before working on new models, hence the act of 'deleting' cards by using the first discard. |
Financial Crisis |
Disables Interest, +1 Mult for every dollar below $10 |
A financial crisis is a disruption in finance systems where asset values drop and could lead to recessions in the economy. This is shown with increasing mult when the player has less money and disabling money earned from interest between rounds. The art depicts a declining stock value, directly shown as an opposite to the rising stocks in the base game's 'To The Moon' Joker. |
Redacted Files |
The rightmost card is destroyed if it does not score |
Classified documents that contain elements not fit for public viewing are blacked out or erased. Destroying an unscoring card fit this theme |
| Card Art | Description | Trivia / Reference |
|---|---|---|
--Steel Supremacy-- Steel Cards retrigger twice when played. |
The effect of this card was designed by Techhead himself who wanted a card that synergized well with Steel cards. The art background depicts Aseprite, the pixel art software both of us use for assets. | |
--Chaos, CHAOS-- 1 in 4 chance for each of the following: +50 Chips, +5 Mult, X1.5 Mult, and $5. If no effect triggers, X2 Mult and $10 |
Jestro's idea took a little time to grow on me, but the chaotic aspect really fit as a fun idea to add to the game. The 7-sided color wheel in the art is a reference to the elemental system of his game Crusader. | |
Chicken Sandwich |
--Potassium Power-- When the first hand is drawn, 1 in 10 chance to create either a Gros Michel or Cavendish |
Funnily enough, Sandwich wanted his card to connect to the banana Jokers Gros Michel and Cavendish. I wanted to make a third banana themed Joker he would generated called a 'Faux Michel', but decided to create either of the base Jokers because it would be funny. |
Cito |
--Offering-- After Boss Blind is defeated, create a random Rare, Negative, Polychrome, Ethereal, Coupon, Double, or Charm Tag |
Unlike some other friends for this group of cards, Cito didn't have his own avatar, so he let me take the reins to create card art with his suggestion to base it off of the Broken Vessel boss and Joni's Repose location from Hollow Knight. |
Blockhead |
--Time Warp-- If Boss Blind is beaten with at least $10 on hand, spend that much to decrease Ante by 1, Cost doubles with every use |
Blockhead is my own internet persona, and the ability being called 'Time Warp' refers to my love for older games and aesthetics. The card background being a vaporware scene within Windows XP relates to this as well. |
Void |
--Crazy 8s-- X1.0 Mult, increases by X0.08 Mult when an 8 of Spades is scored |
Void likes to represent their avatar with either a skull or an 8 of Spades, and chose to base their effect around that card specifically. |
--Stargazer-- Sell 4 more Planet cards to create a Black Hole card. |
Latte was unfamiliar with the rules of Balatro, so I elected to create an effect based on her persona's constellation theme. The effect of destroying Planet cards to create the rare Black Hole Spectral card seemed like a good way to balance less specific hands being upgraded in favor of every hand getting slightly better. | |
--Double Vision-- Scored cards are retriggered if they match either the rank or suit of the leftmost card |
The original idea was to gain chips to add to the score based on triggering the boss blind, a reference to the running joke in Solstice's community of having poor eyesight (which she allowed me to make). This was changed to a less situational ability after some testing. | |
--Hex Magic-- Scoring 6s with no Edition are converted to Polychrome, Retrigger all Polychrome cards |
Keksi's internet persona Evelyn is a succubus, so I had the quick idea to connect it to the theme of 6's. Choosing the Polychrome as the modifier took a little work to balance, but being relegated to boost only one rank specifically seemed like a good workaround. | |
--Showstopper-- X1.0 Mult, increases by X0.1 Mult if played hand is different from the previous hand. Otherwise, resets. |
Moki has multiple Minecraft SMP series with his friends they stream over Twitch. I decided to make the effect based on how every time they stream is of a different series. | |
Claire |
--Hungry Dog-- Takes $1 with every hand played and increases sell value by $2 |
Claire wanted a joke card that was basically a hinderance by stealing money. I added in the effect of increasing sell value so it could have a backup effect that can help with econ in a pinch. It also has synergy with Swashbuckler and Ceremonial Dagger. |
--Doomed Yuri-- If played hand is a Pair, retrigger both, destroy the rightmost card, and gain $3 |
Doomed Yuri is a term associated with tragic endings between two female lovers, displayed with one card in the pair being destroyed. The card art background displays a window for Vocaloid software, composition software that Tytsune works with. | |
--Boss Raid-- X2.0 Mult on Boss Blinds, increases by X0.75 when a Boss Blind is defeated. |
Reiko is a friend of mine who streams Monster Hunter and FromSoftware games often. I decided to base the card effect off of those games' emphasis on bosses or grandiose encounters, with the card growing stronger representing jumping back into the fight. | |
Mockhead |
--Warp Speed-- ^1.0 Chips, increases by 0.2 when skipping a Blind |
Mockhead is a varient of Blockhead designed as an antithesis of their views. Where Blockhead focuses on delaying higher antes, Mockhead rewards skipping Blinds, and where Blockhead is shown with vibrant vaporwave colors, Mockhead is shown with a more muted cassette futurism aesthetic. |
